Air pollution levels in Ukraine greatly exceed those in the EU
Air pollution levels in Ukraine greatly exceed those in the EU. This according to the participants of the roundtable organized in Kyiv on February 27 by Living Planet NGO with assistance from the International Renaissance Foundation’s European Program.
According to experts, Ukraine’s laws and regulations in this sphere have only been 30% adapted to EU legislation. Safety standards and the regulatory and methodological foundation that producers and government oversight agencies are forced to follow are mostly leftover from the Soviet Union and do not factor in the requirements of existing environmental legislation, modern technologies and industry needs.
“The first step towards introducing EU air quality standards is studying and introducing the EU’s system of institutional management in this field,” said Svitlana Berzina, President of Living Planet.
The organizers will send the government recommendations developed during the meeting for the implementation of EU air quality legislation and actualization of the Basic Plan on Convergence of Ukrainian Legislation with EU Environmental Legislation.

The essential role of the European Program lies in promotion of Ukraine’s European integration, combining external pressure of the EU with the domestic one of the Ukrainian civil society, and thus contributing to promotion of open society values in Ukraine.
