September 8, 2009, opening of an exposition called “Outstanding Mariupol residents who are a part of the European history and modern times. Outstanding Europeans who have become a part of history and modern times of Mariupol” was held at the Kuindzhi Exhibition Hall in Mariupol.
The exposition is prepared within the framework of the eponymous municipal event that lasted from August 6 till September 4, 2009. The initiator of the event was the Mariupol Youth Union in a partnership with the Department on Family and Youth of the City Council, under the support of deputies’ permanent commission on family, youth, culture and sports, within the framework of the European Perspective Project, being implemented under the facilitation of the European Program of the International Renaissance Foundation.
The Department on Culture and Tourism of the City Council and Hrushevsky Library facilitated the preparation of the exposition itself.
As the results of the event showed, Mariupol residents are proud of their townsmen and consider their many townsmen’s professional activity to be significant for the entire Europe. Among 70 applications, the organizers chose 40 descriptions of achievements of these people, who are famous outside of Ukraine. It appeared that Mariupol residents are most widely represented in European sports and culture.
After additional public discussions, the organizers chose 8 persons, whose influence on the European history and modern times is the most unusual and diverse, and they also chose two Europeans who actually participated in creation of Mariupol.
