Europeans who have contributed to the development of Luhansk Oblast are “wanted”

A project “European Face of Luhansk Oblast” was launched in Luhansk in June. The project aims at researching contribution of the European countries’ natives into development of Luhansk Oblast. This project is being implemented by the Luhansk Charitable Foundation “Light of Heart”, with support of the International Renaissance Foundation, and will last until October 2010. The project “European Face of Luhansk Oblast” is a local history research, the results of which will be presented through publication of a book and arranging of a traveling exhibition devoted to the Day of Luhansk.

The research of European natives’ contribution into the history of Luhansk Oblast development will be conducted by means of studying documents of city and district museums of local history, local libraries, archives of 11 districts and towns of the Oblast, interviewing local residents, librarians, employees of archives.

As a result of the study, the book “European Face of Luhansk Oblast” is planned for publishing. The book will contain information about Europeans who influenced history and development of Luhansk Oblast. The publication will cover the historical period from the middle of the 18th century to present day: establishment of Luhansk, the two world wars, occupation period, soviet times and independent Ukraine period.

Hanna Nyzkodubova, a project manager, said “Our main goal is to raise awareness of local population about Ukraine’s historical and cultural belonging to Europe, provide people with information on Europeans’ contribution into development of Luhansk Oblast. The exhibition, which we devote to the Day of our city, will be the main event and we invite all Luhansk residents to attend it in September. The travelling exhibition will have a positive impact on public opinion concerning European essence of Ukraine, due to its audience appeal and capacity of visual images to help memorize information. Combination of text and visual materials ensures good memorability.”

Martin Paul Buchholz, an expert researcher, noted “I am glad to work on this project, which could raise awareness of the growing generation of historical and cultural affiliation of Luhansk Oblast, its districts and towns, to European countries. By its geographic location Ukraine is in the center of Europe, and local people should know not only Gascoigne, but also such well-known Europeans who have distinguished in history and culture of Luhansk Oblast as Hartmann, Shevych, Preradovych, Gustave Hess de Calwe and others.
