Data on the demographics of the 2012 parliamentary elections in Ukraine
The organizers of the National Exit Poll have released data on the demographics of the 2012 parliamentary elections in Ukraine. The exit poll was conducted by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation, Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), and the Oleksandr Razumkov Ukrainian Center for Economic and Political Studies with the support of the International Renaissance Foundation, Netherlands Embassy in Ukraine, National Endowment for Democracy (USA), Pact Inc., UNITER project and the European Union.
UDAR did best among young voters under 30 (25%). The Party of Regions came in second in all age categories, with the exception of the youngest voters, with support increasing with age. Support for Batkivshchyna is fairly even among all age categories, with the exception of the youngest (22%, with 24-26% in all other age groups). Support for Svoboda is nearly the same in all age groups (11-13%). Meanwhile, support for the Communists increases with age.
Another factor affecting voter choice is education level. This applies most to Svoboda and the Communist Party. Support for Svoboda increases with increased education level. In contrast, support for the Communists decreases with increased education. Support for the Party of Regions is greatest among voters with an incomplete secondary education – 36% – and decreases as education level increases. Support for Batkivshchyna is steady among all education groups (24-25%).
Party support also varies by settlement type. Batkivshchyna has the strongest support in villages (29%), slightly less in oblast centers (25%), and less in cities (20.5%). The Party of Regions had less support in oblast centers (22%) and more in other cities (32%) and villages (30%). The Communist Party got most of its votes in cities that are not oblast centers (14%) and less in oblast centers (10%) and villages (11%). Meanwhile, most of Svoboda’s support came from oblast centers (18%) with significantly less in other cities (10%) and villages (9%). The situation with UDAR is similar – oblast centers (19%), other cities (13%) and villages (14%).
