Sociologists identify key factors affecting voter choice

37% of Ukrainians based their choice on party program, ideas and proposals

37% of Ukrainians that have decided who they will vote for in the upcoming parliamentary elections based their choice on party program, ideas and proposals. This according to the results of a survey conducted jointly by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation and Razumkov Center with the support of the International Renaissance Foundation and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Kyiv.

Nearly a third of those surveyed (31.6%) said they will vote for a particular party because they “like its leaders”, while 17.9% will make their choice because the party “represents the interests of people like me”. 16.7% will chose the party that “compared with others” is the “lesser evil”, and 15.5% believe a party deserves their vote because it “has already proven to be effective”. 15.1% will vote for a party because it has a good chance of winning. Only 1.2% of respondents said they “selected the party by chance” (respondents could choose no more than two factors).

2009 voters were surveyed on 10-15 August in all oblasts of Ukraine. The poll’s margin of error is 2.3%.
