October 8 – health care experts, together with the International Renaissance Foundation representatives, as well as journalists and NGO experts, participated in the roundtable on palliative care. The event, entitled “Needs, problems and prospects of hospice care development in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast”, was dedicated to the World Hospice and Palliative Care Day. Participants of the roundtable discussed creation of the unified model of complex and high-quality palliative and hospice care to people with incurable diseases and limited prognosis of life expectancy residing in Ivano-Frankivsk oblast. The roundtable was held in the premises of the Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast State Administration.
The roundtable was accompanied with the speeches of representatives of the main department of health (Oblast State Administration), oblast council, city council, head physician, International Renaissance Foundation representatives, as well as public and journalists.
Participants decided to join the celebration of the World Hospice and Palliative Care Day and conduct a series of events under the slogan “Sharing the care – join the campaign”.
The set targets include:
- Conduct awareness raising meetings with representatives of local authorities and public health specialists in the areas of the oblast.
- Open planned palliative (hospice) branches in Dolyna and Horodenka districts.
- Resolve the issue concerning opening of a nursing care (palliative) center in Ivano-Frankivsk.
- Continue training programs for primary care physicians who undergo advanced training (launched in September 2009).
- Introduce the issues of palliative care and hospice medicine into curriculum of medical colleges.
- Introduce the issues of palliative care and hospice medicine into curriculum of advanced training programs for nursing, on the basis of the teaching hospice center.
- Develop and implement the system of providing modern palliative care to oncologic patients in fourth stage at home, on the basis of city clinics.
- Address the International Renaissance Foundation on providing support for creation of pilot projects “Visiting hospice service” and “Mobile consultative hospice team”.
- Adopt an address statement to residents of the Oblast concerning support to development of palliative and hospice care.
- Create and adopt a regional program for palliative and hospice care network development.
Options and possibilities for providing palliative and hospice care:
- Visiting service (hospice at home)
- Day care centers (in-patient hospitals)
- day-and-night clinics
- Consulting rooms
- Mobile consultative team in medical institution
- Organization of palliative beds in hospitals and medical centers on a specific need
- Nursing Departments
