Election campaign violations detailed on interactive map

The violations map offers every citizen the opportunity to report election law violations

More than 600 violations of electoral law have been documented on the interactive map “Maidan Monitoring: Elections 2012”. Photos, videos and official documents have been submitted from all regions of Ukraine. The results were presented by the participants of the press conference “40 Days until Election Day: Fair Play or Fighting without Rules?” held on September 18 in Kyiv.

The violations map, developed by the Vsesvit Civic Information and Methodology Center with support from the International Renaissance Foundation, offers every citizen the opportunity to report election law violations. “In addition to original reports, the information on the map comes from a variety of sources – partner NGOs, media, parties and social networks. We engaged volunteers from all regions of Ukraine,” said the project’s PR manager, Lyudmyla Yamshchykova.

Commenting about the preliminary results, the project’s legal expert, Oleksandr Severyn, noted: “At this stage of the election process we can observe some very serious barriers thwarting free choice.”

The most common violations are:
– administrative pressure – support by government officials of a certain candidate/party and discrimination of others;
– deception of voters – events/works funded by the state budget are presented to voters as results of efforts of a certain candidate/party;
– indirect bribery of voters – free or discounted services or goods are given away to voters to encourage them to vote for a certain candidate/party.
