Ensuring access to medical care

Lawyers and representatives of HIV/AIDS organizations gathered to identify key messages pertaining to the right to medical care for people that require constant care and access to medication.

On October 31, lawyers and representatives of HIV/AIDS organizations gathered to identify key messages pertaining to the right to medical care for people that require constant care and access to medication. The meeting was organized by the Ukrainian Legal Aid Foundation with support from the International Renaissance Foundation.

The participants identified the stakeholders and channels for delivering information to people detained by law enforcement. In a lively discussion they identified the main problems that lawyers face when trying to contact a client or find out about their health. Lawyers say that the state of a client’s health is central to ensuring their right to proper care; therefore, it is important that a lawyer whose client has a chronic or infectious disease can make contact and establish trust with this client.

The participants also agreed that the groups that can influence the problem of access to medical care are the client, their families and lawyers. As such, the participants determined that the messages that will be used in the information campaign will target all stakeholders.

The objective of the meeting was achieved – they came up with short messages that offer simple and practical advice that will be used in printed materials distributed among the target group, their families and lawyers working in the legal aid system.
