First textbook on palliative care published in Ukraine

The textbook “Palliative Care: ЕРЕС™. Education in Palliative and End-of-life Care. Oncology” was presented in Kyiv

On April 11, a presentation of the textbook “Palliative Care: ЕРЕС™. Education in Palliative and End-of-life Care. Oncology” was held in Kyiv. The textbook was published by the Kalyta Publishing House with support from the International Renaissance Foundation’s Public Health Initiative. The textbook was the result of a joint initiative of specialists from the Kyiv Medical University of UAFM, doctors, and activists.

This is the first and so far only international textbook on palliative care published in Ukraine. It is approved by the Ministry of Health, but published not with state funds.

The textbook consists of 15 modules. It allows doctors in various fields, teachers, and students to gain practical skills in palliative care – from assessment of patients’ environment and needs to handling stress and burnout by doctors.

According to experts, access to international standards and practices is extremely important for the development of palliative care in Ukraine, but they are not accessible to most doctors. “At the institute we are taught to save lives, but we’re not taught how to handle a patient that can’t be cured. When you can’t cure, you can still help, just the help needs to be different,” said Dr. Zoya Maksymova, a psychologist that works at Kyiv Municipal Clinical Hospital #2.
