Steps taken to improve drinking water in Ukraine

On October 23, representatives of government, the public and scientists gathered in Kyiv for the roundtable “Principles of the Acquis Communautaire as a Precondition for Improving Water Quality in Ukraine.”

On October 23, representatives of government, the public and scientists gathered in Kyiv for the roundtable “Principles of the Acquis Communautaire as a Precondition for Improving Water Quality in Ukraine.”

They discussed specific steps to improve the quality of water in Ukraine, including a series of laws and regulations on river basin councils, including their functions, authority, process of establishing, management plans, changes to ways of monitoring water quality and the principle “the polluter pays.”

The roundtable was a part of the project “Mobilizing Environmental Organizations to Lobby for Improved Water Laws in Ukraine Based on the Standards of the EU Water Framework Directive”, which since 2013 has been implemented by the Environment-People-Law NGO with funding from the European Program of the International Renaissance Foundation.
