A Community Law Center has opened in Zhytomyr as part of the project “Legal and Informational Support for Roma in Zhytomyr” supported by the Roma Program Initiative of the International Renaissance Foundation and implemented by the Romano Kkham National and Cultural Society.

The pilot project will last four months. Experts from the organization will work with members of the Roma community in Zhytomyr, provide free legal assistance, and establish relationships with local government to help address social and legal problems faced by the Roma population. The project will include a series of meetings and roundtables with representatives of local government, awareness raising events with representatives of the Roma national minority and an informational newsletter.

The Zhytomyr oblast is home to nearly 3,000 Roma, with the largest communities in the Korosten, Novohrad-Volynsky and Zhytomyr raions. More than 200 Roma live in the oblast center.
