International Renaissance Foundation provides support for presidential debates

Presidential election debates (National Debates) have begun on the First National TV channel

Presidential election debates (National Debates) have begun on the First National TV channel. The project is coordinated by the First National TV channel together with Internews-Ukraine, Hromadske TV, the Suspilnist Foundation, Media Law Institute, and Center UA, with support from the International Renaissance Foundation.

Yevhen Bystrytsky, International Renaissance Foundation Executive Director, had the following to say about the initiative: “We need to move away from elections based on external appearances and political populism that has transformed the presidential elections into finger pointing and competition of unrealistic promises. The public needs to hear from candidates for the highest public office what they believe are the concrete steps, reforms, and ideas the country needs in this difficult time. We need this so that we can make an informed choice, a more rational choice. We are supporting these debates in the hope of hearing meaningful discussions among politicians, public experts, and journalists. We hope the National Debates will promote such discussions.”

The televised debates are moderated by Zurab Alasania, Director General of the National Television Company of Ukraine. They are broadcast live from 7:00 till 8:30 pm.

After the debates, journalists and experts have an opportunity to speak with the candidates on the Campus Conversations, that streams on the Campus 3.0 platform and partner online resources.
