Ukraine’s European integration will promote stability in Eastern Europe, expert says

The conference “Ukrainian Crisis: The West and Russia at a Crossroads” was held in Rome

The European integration of Ukraine is the best way to ensure peace and stability in Ukraine and the entire Eastern European region, says Vasyl Filipchuk, Chairman of the Board of the International Center for Policy Studies (ICPS). He was one of the speakers at the conference “Ukrainian Crisis: The West and Russia at a Crossroads” in Rome that was organized by ICPS in collaboration with the Ukraine Crisis Media Center and Istituto Affari Internazionali (Italy) with support of the International Renaissance Foundation.

“European integration has provided peace and stability in Europe since WWII. And now it should play the same role for the Eastern European region, particularly Ukraine,” the expert said.

“The international community must not ignore or tolerate Russia’s foreign policy. We must through join actions and a principled position return Russia to a civilized form of behavior, and offer the Russians a dignified way of reintegrating with European and global economic and collective structures. We need to change the war scenario into a peace scenario, and this can only be done by taking a strong stance against the terrorists, strengthening Ukraine’s statehood through European integration, and innovative approaches to international guarantees of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and security,” Vasyl Filipchuk said.

The conference participants agreed that over the last three months there has been a major change in the twenty-year paradigm of Ukraine-Russia relations as well as the European security architecture and international order.
