“See you in Nangiyali”: a project about literature and incurable diseases

Chytomo Portal, dedicated to the culture of reading and art of book publishing, with the support of the Public Health Program of the International Renaissance Foundation, launched a series of materials on palliative care “See you in Nangiyali”. This is a series of materials for those, who do not know how to support people, who are faced with an incurable disease, personally or through their loved ones. Story writers were going through the pain, which was not possible to reduce, faced the proximity of terminal illnesses and found their way to survival, embracing their experience in the form of literature.

The series consists of ten materials, with an introductory essay created by Radoslava Chekmysheva, Cultural Initiatives Manager of the International Renaissance Foundation: “The essay is titled Why Write /Read About Death?”. This material explains the social mission performed by cultural projects, which are aimed at bringing into the spotlight the topic of palliative care and the need to provide access to pain relief, as well as demonstrates changes that can be made through this”.

For several years, the International Renaissance Foundation has supported initiatives aimed at the establishment and development of the palliative care system in Ukraine, as an approach to improve the quality of life of patients with serious illnesses and their families, by way of preventing and alleviating suffering through an early detection, careful evaluation and treatment of pain and other physical symptoms, as well as providing psychosocial and moral support.

Ksenia Shapoval, Public Health Program Manager, the International Renaissance Foundation, said: The main challenges of the palliative care are as follows: how to maintain dignity, respect human rights; prevention of suffering, support of the social interaction of seriously ill patients, and family care. Often, when patients are faced with a serious illness, they stay alone with their fears and problems, while this is exactly that moment when they need most help and support. That is why the palliative care, as an integral component of the healthcare system, shall be established on a priority basis”.
