Nations in Transit is Freedom House’s research project on democracy in the 29 formerly communist countries from Central Europe to Central Asia. The flagship of the project is an annual survey of democratic reform that has been published since 1995, and with the same methodology since 2003.

Ukraine has improved its ranking of democracy from 4.75 points in 2015 to 4.68 points in 2016 (on a scale of 1 to 7, with 1 being the most democratic, and 7 the least).

Founded in 1941, Freedom House is America’s oldest non-profit organization dedicated to promoting and defending democracy and freedom and has a successful record of conducting training programs, targeted assistance, advocacy, research, and monitoring to support democratic governance, human rights, civil society development, and independent media worldwide.

The International Renaissance Foundation’s mission is to foster an open, participatory, pluralist society based on democratic values in Ukraine. It is part of the Open Society Foundations network established by investor and philanthropist George Soros.
