Kyiv-Mohyla Academy introduces Roma Studies Program
The National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy has launched an interdisciplinary certificate program in Roma Studies. The program is being run by the Humanitarian Collegium Scientific Society with support from the International Renaissance Foundation Roma of Ukraine Program.
The Roma Studies Program aims to help Roma youth obtain a university-level liberal arts education and involve Roma youth in social and cultural life in the country. The aim is also to promote tolerance towards Roma in Ukrainian society.
Students of the Roma Studies Program will be able to choose from a number of unique courses, master classes and seminars on topics such as: Spiritual Culture of Ukrainian Gypsies, Religious Beliefs of Gypsies, Material Culture of Roma of Ukraine: Past and Present, History of Roma Communities in the Post-Soviet Space, Holocaust of the Roma in Zakarpattia, among others. The Roma Studies Program will also explore the activities of Roma organizations and the functioning of Roma media in Europe.
The project will involve Ukrainian experts (historians, linguists, art and museum experts) as well as leading Roma scholars from abroad. An important component will be the establishment of contacts and cooperation with Roma centers, archives, libraries and museums in Europe – centers of preservation of the spiritual and material culture of the Roma people.

The Roma of Ukraine program goal is to promote the initiatives aimed at raising the level of education of Roma youth, elaboration and monitoring of the efficient state policy regarding Roma minority, improvement of access to healthcare services and promotion of Roma rights protection efforts.
