Ukrainian Helsinki Human Rights Group announces competition for joining the regional training “Fundamentals of human rights and civic journalism”. The event is supported by the Norwegian Helsinki Committee and The Rule of Law Program of International Renaissance Foundation.

The training is an educational project of the Ukrainian educational program “Understanding human rights”. Human Rights Centre “Postup” (Lugansk) is the local partner of the steering committee for regional training.

The participants will gain knowledge of human rights and mechanisms for their protection, also learning some important concepts related to human rights, gaining experience and skills required for hands-on human rights action using modern information technology. Training will consist of a distance learning program and a workshop.

The workshop will be held from 14 to 20 March in the Luhansk region. The location is to be confirmed. Distance learning program will run from 15 February to 10 March. Tasks completion will be organized online.

The competition is open for civic activists aged 18 to 27 years and living in Lugansk, Donetsk and Dnipropetrivsk regions – NGO representatives, student and trade union activists, volunteers and other motivated individuals engaged in solving pressing social problems of their region.

Participants’ selection criteria:

– Compliance with formal requirements of the competition;

– Socially important activities;

– Understanding the social problems in the region;

– High motivation to participate;

– Preference given to candidates with publications on relevant topics (including the Internet and social networks);

– Intention to cooperate with members of the regional training, its regional partners and other graduates of the “Understanding human rights” program;

– Preference given to candidates with recommendations from human rights organizations, alumni of “Understanding human rights” program, heads of education and media establishments.

For effective results from the workshop, each participant will need a laptop; regular Internet access is required for distance learning.

The participants are provided with accommodation, meals, return travel expenses to the venue (coach or coupe train carriage fare, on presenting the tickets and subject to attend all training events).

For participation please:

1) Register as a candidate for the training and wait for confirmation from the organizers. To register, fill out the online registration form. Do not fill the field “Additional task, if specified in the event announcement”;

2) Prepare and submit an essay (up to one page) on one of the following topics. Essay topics can be downloaded in MS WORD format. Alternatively the application form could be obtained by email from the organizers, on request. Essays should be submitted to organizers by e-mail to rozumiemopravaludyny@gmail.com. A message from the organizers will be sent to acknowledge candidate registration and acceptance of the competition essay.

Eligible for the training participants will be asked to complete distance learning program. Only those participants who successfully complete the program will be invited to the regional training workshop.

Deadline for application – 10 February 2011. Participants will be notified of selection results by 14 February.
