IRF’s experience of be applied in creating state legal aid centers
On July 2, the Ministry of Justice issued order №968/5 on the creation of republican, oblast and municipal legal aid centers in Ukraine.
Centers that will provide free secondary legal aid in the Kyiv, Kharkiv and Khmelnytsky oblasts will be established on the basis of the public defenders offices created in 2006-2007 with the support of the International Renaissance Foundation’s Rule of Law Program. These are the first centers the ministry intends to establish in 2012-2014.
Plans also call for the creation of pilot inter-raion legal aid centers in Kamyanets-Podilsky and Shepetivka (Khmelnytsky oblast). 43 inter-raion centers will be established in 2013, and 24 centers in cities of republican and oblast significance will open their doors in 2014.
