On December 10 an independent Public Council was created at the Inter TV channel. It is an extension of the “Open News for Honest Elections” initiative launched by the International Renaissance Foundation during the recent parliamentary election campaign.

The Public Council will monitor the channel for compliance with international standards of journalism and provide regular assessments of the level of balanced reporting on political, economic and important social issues on Inter.

Members of the Public Council include Ivan Dzyuba (Academician, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine), Ihor Burakovsky (Director, The Institute for Economic Research and Policy Consulting), Oleksandr Sushko (Research Director, Institute for Euro-Atlantic Cooperation), Viktoria Siumar (Executive Director, Institute of Mass Information), Valeriy Chalyy (Deputy General Director, Razumkov Center), Aleksander Smolar (Chairman of the Board, Stefan Batory Foundation), Anders Aslund (Senior Fellow, Peterson Institute), and Andrew Wilson (Senior Policy Fellow, European Council on Foreign Relations).

According to Viktoria Syumar, the Public Council was created to enable the public to more effectively influence information policy on one of the country’s leading TV channels. “To influence in order to ensure objective news, to publicly alert the channel of violations of journalism standards and compliance by journalists of principles of objective journalism, so that these violations are corrected and there appear on the channel independent platforms for the discussion of important social and political issues and new people capable of implementing these objectives,” she explained.
