Canada to provide support for medical care for Ukrainian activists

Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird announced funding for medical supplies and equipment in Ukraine

Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs John Baird announced funding for medical supplies and equipment in Ukraine – within the Humanitarian Solidarity Initiative. It was launched by Ukrainian writers Serhiy Zhadan, Oksana Zabuzhko, Andriy Kurkov, and ex-Minister of health Vasyl Knyazevych with support of the International Renaissance Foundation.

Canada is helping to provide medical care for Ukrainian activists through a contribution for the purchase of medical supplies and equipment.

“This funding will ensure that medical treatment is provided to the courageous activists injured while speaking out in support of democracy,” said Baird. “Canada strongly supports the Ukrainian people in their fight for a free and democratic Ukraine,” he added.

This announcement comes after Canada has continuously urged the Ukrainian government to find a political solution by engaging in a real dialogue with the people of Ukraine. “Canada and the international community expect the Ukrainian authorities to respect and protect the rights of all Ukrainians, including the right to express their opinions freely. We call on the Ukrainian government to work with the opposition and protesters to respond to the legitimate calls of the Ukrainian people for true democracy, including full amnesty for the protesters,” Minister said.
