77% of Ukrainians unhappy with work of new parliament
Only 14% of the population of Ukraine is satisfied with the way the new Verkhovna Rada is functioning, while 77% are disappointed in its work so far. This according to the results of a survey conducted by the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation and the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, with assistance provided by the International Renaissance Foundation, the Netherlands Embassy in Ukraine, and the European Union.
The majority of the population (57%) believes the political situation in Ukraine is tense, and 17% see it as potentially explosive. 18% consider the political situation calm, while only 1% say it is good.
44% of respondents say parliament should seek compromises in conflicts, while 21.5% believe the sides should stick to their positions without compromising. Another 14% are of the opinion that “there is a majority in the Verkhovna Rada that should pass laws and take responsibility for them”.
Only 16% of the population believes the work of the Verkhovna Rada depends primarily on voters that elected them. Significantly more see the president (39%) or oligarch groups (30%) as the leading forces.
The nationwide opinion poll was conducted on 5-13 March 2013 via interviews of 2037 respondents. The margin of error (not taking into account design effect) does not exceed +/-2.3% with a 95% confidence level.
