Violations of the right to peaceful assembly are now being documented on an interactive map
The Maidan Monitoring Information Center is monitoring the observance by government authorities of Ukrainian citizens’ right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. The initiative is supported by the International Renaissance Foundation’s Civil Society and Good Governance Program.
The project initiators collect and post on an interactive map reports of violations of these fundamental rights.
Once a reported violation is verified, the following steps are taken:
a) a visual case report is created;
b) an email is sent to the appropriate government authority requesting information about the violation, grounds for the decision, action or lack of action, etc., and the response is posted online;
c) if no reply is received, the request is made in writing and the response or information about the lack of a response is posted online;
d) if no reply is received to a written request, notice is sent to the prosecutor’s office of an administrative office;
e) in the case of confirmation of serious and blatant violations a letter is sent to the prosecutor’s office, Ministry of Internal Affairs or Verkhovna Rada Human Rights Commissioner for steps to be taken by the prosecutor’s office or to report an offense pursuant to Article 340 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (Illegal interference with the organization or holding of assemblies, rallies, marches and demonstrations).
A complaint can be reported by filling out the online form or emailing monitor@maidan.org.ua and should be accompanied by evidence (scanned document, photo, video, link).
