Kremenchuk community proposes to install a memorial stone in honor of outstanding countryman Dmytro Tiomkin
The round table was organized by the NGO “Foundation for the Development of Kremenchuk Community” within the project “Tiomkin Days-2010 – Days of European Culture in Kremenchuk” supported by the European Program of the International Renaissance Foundation.
Participants of the round table, including representatives of local authorities, mass media and local historians, presented the main achievements of the project “Tiomkin Days-2010 – Days of European Culture in Kremenchuk”.
It was noted that a created bilingual (Ukrainian-English) website (www.tiomkin.info), within the project, is the first online resource in Ukraine dedicated to the composer Dmytro Tiomkin. Participants pointed out that the website can become a place for discussion of composer’s creative works and life for his fans around the world in terms of developing friendly relations and creating conditions for further work to perpetuate the memory of Dmytro Tiomkin.
Participants learned about the program of literary and musical performance of mobile Dmytro Tiomkin Club, which has started working in Kremenchuk schools since September. They agreed that informing students on biography of the composer expands the horizons of students and raises patriotism of children.
Historians of the region noted that research in archives conducted within the project made it possible to publish accurate information about Dmytro Tiomkin’s life in Kremenchuk. Participants discovered such facts as: in 1900 the Tiomkin family lived in the Lipavsky house on Khersonska Street (present name – Karl Marx Street); in 1904 – the family lived in Paryzky house on Doktorska Street in the downtown (now – Radianska Street).
Given that there is no single memorial sign dedicated to the world famous countryman Dmytro Tiomkin, participants discussed the possibility of installing a memorial stone on the Radianska Street (where the composer’s family lived in 1904) as recognition of that composer’s genius was born in Kremenchuk.
Participants of the round table agreed that raising awareness about composer’s art achievements will contribute to public perception of Dmytro Tiomkin as a fellow countryman that made significant contribution into development of the European civilization and world culture. Kremenchuk community will be increasingly aware of Kremenchuk’s historical and cultural affiliation to European civilization and world culture. The image of Dmytro Tiomkin’s native town as a primary spiritual source of the genius will be improved.

The purpose of the project “Tiomkin Days-2010 – Days of European Culture in Kremenchuk”, which is implemented by the NGO “Foundation for the Development of Kremenchuk Community”, with the support of the European Program of the International Renaissance Foundation, is to raise awareness of Kremenchuk residents about contribution of their fellow countryman Dmytro Tiomkin, world renowned composer, winner of four Oscars, into development of the European and world culture.
