International Conference “Enhancing Transparency of the Negotiation Process with the EU: International Experience and Lessons for Ukraine”
On March 28, 2008, the international conference “Enhancing Transparency of the Negotiation Process with the EU: International Experience and Lessons for Ukraine” was held.
The conference was organized by the International Renaissance Foundation in partnership with the Ukrainian Delegation to negotiations with the EU on concluding a new foundation agreement between Ukraine and the EU.
The aim of the conference was to present the interesting experience of Central and Eastern Europe countries in negotiating with the EU. The following issues were discussed:
– How the governments of other countries inform the public about negotiations with the EU and how the Ukrainian government does this;
– How the governments of other countries involve representatives of civil society in developing the official position in EU talks, and how this occurs in Ukraine;
– How representatives of civil society and interest groups influence the negotiation process with the EU and does something similar occur in Ukraine;
– How the media in other countries cover the problems of talks with the EU and how Ukrainian media handle this.
Conference participants included: Péter Balázs, former Hungarian European Commissioner and Hungarian State Secretary on European Integration; Darius Zeruolis, former Lithuanian Deputy Chancellor with responsibility for European Affairs; Mall Hellam, Rapporteur for Ukraine of the European Economic and Social Committee; Olev Aarma, Head of the Secretariat, Estonian Parliamentary EU Affairs Committee; Dirk Schuebel, Head of Political and Press & Information Section, Delegation of the European Commission to Ukraine; Ambassador Borys Tarasyuk, Head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on European Integration; Pavlo Klimkin, Head of the Directorate General for the European Union, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine; Ambassador Kostyantyn Hryshchenko, Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Shadow Ukrainian Government; Łukasz Lipiński, journalist, “Gazeta Wyborcza”; Andriy Kulykov, host of the “Svoboda Slova” program on Channel ICTV, representatives of government bodies, the Ukrainian expert community, diplomatic offices and international organizations in Ukraine.
Approximately 180 people attended the conference.
