In Crimea the public will control observance of citizens’ rights to freedom of peaceful assembly

The project involves research and public monitoring of citizens’ rights to freedom of peaceful assembly in the Crimea, the analysis of legal acts of local self-government agencies and current legislation of Ukraine concerning the right of citizens to freedom of peaceful assembly.

In 2010 the expert-analytical group will do:

• analysis of the materials in printed and electronic media of the Crimea regarding coverage of enforcement of citizens’ rights to freedom of peaceful assembly in the Crimea;
• analysis of decisions of first instance courts of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea concerning conduct of peaceful assembly;
• participant observation of actors in peaceful actions of citizens;
• interviews, based on unstructured interview method, with organizers, managers and participants of peaceful actions on enforcement of their right to freedom of peaceful assemblies.

Cases of violations of citizens’ right to freedom of peaceful assembly in the Crimea will be published in printed and electronic media of Crimea.

In August 2010, organizers will hold a public discussion on the research results and developed recommendations, involving NGOs, local organizations of political parties and other stakeholders, about the state of securing citizens’ right to freedom of peaceful assembly in the Crimea.

The goal of the project “Observance rights of citizens to freedom of peaceful assembly”, implemented by the NGO “Yevpatoriya Center for Regional Development”  with the support of the Rule of Law Program of the International Renaissance Foundation, is to conduct research and public monitoring of the enforcement of citizens’ right to freedom of peaceful assembly in the Crimea; develop proposals to improve the enforcement of constitutional right of citizens to freedom of peaceful assembly.
