Coordination Council on Palliative and Hospice Medicine approved directions of activity for the year of 2010

The following people participated in the sitting:

  • Deputy Head of the Coordination Council Yu.I. Gubsky;
  • Director of the Department for Development of Medical Care of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine M.P. Zhdanova;
  • Director of the Public Health Program of the International Renaissance Foundation V.B. Tymoshevska.

Members of the Coordination Council and invited guests made their speeches at the sitting.

During the sitting, the participants made a number of speeches, in particular, Deputy Head of the Coordination Council Yu.I. Gubsky made a speech called “The Results of Activity of the Coordination Council and Development of Palliative Care in Ukraine”. Members of the Council approved the results of activity of the Coordination Council on Palliative and Hospice Medicine, affiliated with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, in the period of 2008-2009 and decided to approve the following directions of activity of the Council for 2010:

  • Coordination of activity on creation of a network of healthcare facilities (hospices, palliative care units) for provision of palliative and hospice care, development of out-patient care services for patients with chronic incurable diseases;
  • Provision of organizational-methodological assistance to healthcare facilities that provide palliative and hospice care;
  • Development of scientific studies and implementation of modern achievements of medical science on palliative and hospice care;
  • Creation of modern standards and clinical protocols on palliative and hospice care; development of the formulary system along with giving special attention to expansion of access of palliative patients to drug (opioid) analgesics;
  • Creation of the system of training of specialists in palliative and hospice medicine on the level of doctors and nurses, in order for them to apply that knowledge in their work at hospices, palliative care units and in the general network of provision of medical care to population;
  • Creation of a working group on analysis, development and making changes in the legislation of Ukraine on provision of palliative care;
  • Creation of a professional association (society) of specialists in palliative and hospice medicine.

The next sitting of the Coordination Council on Palliative and Hospice Medicine is planned for the spring of 2010.
