Conference “500 Books of the World Humanities Culture under the Support of the International Renaissance Foundation”

October 20, 2009, a conference “500 Books of the World Humanities Culture under the support of the International Renaissance Foundation” took place in the Congregation Hall of the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy (2, Skovorody St.).

The conference was devoted to problems of publishing and Ukrainian translation of books, as well as to distribution of state funds for support of book publishing in Ukraine. The event took place on the occasion of publishing of the 500 th book under the support of the Social Capital and Academic Publications Program of the International Renaissance Foundation, in order to draw the attention of the state and the public to problems of the Ukrainian book publishing and translation. The participants of the conference presented the results of the publishing activity of the International Renaissance Foundation and the books, published under the support of the Foundation.

Well-known translators, experts of the publishing sphere, scholars, public figures, publishers, educators and journalists have participated in the conference.

The following people were invited to give their speeches:

• Andriy Dakhniy (Ph. D. in Philosophy, Assistant Professor of the Chair of History of Philosophy of Lviv National University named after Ivan Franko), “Transliteration in translation sphere of the post-Soviet Ukraine: between russification and small village mentality”;
• Dmytro Drozdovsky (Editor of section for criticism and opinion-based journalism of the world literature magazine “Vsesvit” (Universe), Laureate of Translation Award named after Maksym Rylsky), “Ukrainian translation of the end of the 20 th – beginning of the 21 st centuries: Ave Europa! or trap of vicious circle?”
• Mykhailo Minakov (Ph. D. in Philosophy, Assistant Professor of the Chair of Philosophy and Religious Studies of NaUKMA), “Dialectics of quantity and quality in Ukrainian translations of philosophical literature”
• Andriy Portnov (Candidate of Historical Sciences, editor of the magazine “Ukraina Moderna”), “Culture of book publishing of translated historical literature”
